Useful Stats: Higher Education R&D Expenditures by State and Source of Funds
Across the U.S., the federal government provided 53% of R&D funding at institutions of higher education in FY 2018. Those institutions provided 26% of the funding themselves, and most of the remainder was provided by a mix of nonprofit organizations (7%), industry (6%), and state and local government (5%). The specific contributions varied from state to state, however, with some relying more on specific relationships to support R&D within the state.

Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) was awarded for his leadership recently by Rutgers University, Princeton University and The Science Coalition. The median inflation-adjusted salary for a worker with a high-school degree who has not attended college increased by less than 1% from 2008 to 2017 (inching from $37,596 to $37,960). Moreover, non-college-degree workers earn just 56% as much as the median worker with at least a bachelor’s degree.”

Stockton Receives $8M from Scarpa Foundation
Entrepreneur and philanthropist John F. Scarpa has pledged $8 million to the Stockton University Foundation. It is the largest gift in the university’s history. The gift from The John F. Scarpa Foundation, courtesy of John and Jana Scarpa, will target two primary initiatives, Stockton’s expansion of its Academic program in Atlantic City and its Health Sciences program at its mainland campus and create an unrestricted fund for other university needs.
How $29M Grant Facilitates Translational Medicine in NJ
According to George Saliba of NJ Business Magazine, “The Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science – which includes the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Princeton University – today officially celebrated receiving a $29 million grant last March from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for becoming part of the NIH’s Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program. Total funding over the next five years swells to approximately $45 million when the local institutions’ own, voluntary financial commitments are included.”
