Newark High School Students Attend Rutgers-Newark’s Innovative Summer STEM Program
Twenty-four high school students from the Greater Newark Area got a chance to dive deep into STEM fields this summer as part of an innovative program called “Science in Your City,” run by Rutgers University-Newark and Jersey City’s Liberty Science Center. The new outreach program, called t-STEM, brought rising high school seniors from Newark and Jersey City to RU-N for four weeks in July and early August.

Stockton University Receives a 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine Stockton University has received a 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This is the second year in a row the University has received the award. The annual HEED Award is a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Trump’s Tech Council Moves ‘Full Steam Ahead’ Despite Tension with Silicon Valley
Melissa Quinn reports in The Washington Examiner that President Donald Trump signaled a willingness to forge a relationship with Silicon Valley in the weeks before assuming the presidency, and his administration has since sought input from the industry to advance its tech policy goals. But though the broader tech community is aligned with the president on issues such as modernization of government IT systems and removing barriers to innovation, Silicon Valley has continued to split with the administration over several of Trump’s policy decisions.
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Names Dr. H. Richard Alexander as Chief Surgical Officer Expanding its surgical and research focus on cancers of the abdominal area and rare conditions including endocrine and mesothelioma malignancies, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey has named H. Richard Alexander, M.D., FACS, as its new chief surgical officer. Dr. Alexander also has an appointment as a professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
NJIT Clean Fuels Specialist Dr. Xianqin Wang Wins American Chemical Society Honors
Tracey Regan reports that New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Xianqin Wang, Ph.D., a noted designer of novel catalytic systems used to enhance production of a variety of clean fuels, won the 2017 “Emerging Researcher” award for the American Chemical Society’s energy and fuels division at the organization’s national meeting in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes “sustained and distinguished contributions” to the field of fuel chemistry. Dr. Wang, an associate professor of chemical engineering, is the first woman to win it.
