Experts from Washington, D.C think tanks will join a panel of experts from New Jersey industries to discuss legal immigration and the importance of temporary foreign workers to New Jersey’s economy, as part of an online seminar presented by the Garden State Immigration Policy Institute.

“The Urgent Need for Temporary Foreign Workers in New Jersey’s Economy,” a free online event at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 1, will feature keynotes from David Bier, associate director of Immigration Studies at the Cato Institute; and Theresa Cardinal Brown, managing director of Immigration and Cross-Border Policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Panelists representing key sectors of the New Jersey’s economy that depend on temporary legal immigration, including agriculture, construction, restaurant & hospitality, and shore tourism will also participate in the discussion.

The event will explore how labor shortages continue to impact many New Jersey businesses dependent on seasonal and temporary labor and discuss whether the nation’s temporary foreign worker visa programs, such as the H-2A, H-2B and J-1, are sufficient to meet employment needs that fluctuate in changing economic cycles and vary by region and season. The goal is to identify strategies that meet the needs of employers and the temporary foreign workers in a way that boosts the state’s economy.

The Garden State Immigration Policy Institute is a joint initiative of NJBIA and the New Jersey Business Immigration Coalition, whose steering committee includes NJBIA Chief Government Affairs Officer Christopher Emigholz. This online event is also sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Land Improvement Contractors Association (NJLICA).
